The Internet As a Tool For Compassion

Image
What if it's the stress, judgment and separation that is the illusion? Seriously, what if that isn't just woo-woo bulls**t talk?           I really enjoy learning more about what life is like for other people. It's important in the growth of my empathy and in widening the acknowledgement of and celebration of other lifestyles, cultures, points of view, etc. There are plenty of pros and cons to the internet, and one big pro is how we can use it to educate ourselves bit by bit and feel connected to people thousands of miles away. Of course, I'm preaching to the choir, here, but I love that someone in Hartford could get the sense of community they need from people in Oslo, Nice, Lisbon, Austin, Reykjavík.

'My Brother Jordan'; Impacted by a Documentary About a Young Man I Didn’t Know

Image
Just to give you an indication of where I'm going with this, the original title of this post started with the word, "Appreciation". I’ve been changed by a documentary I found on YouTube. If you’ve been deeply impacted by a doc about an individual, I’d love to hear from you; I’d like to see what you learned and how you have changed your life based on it, because this is an intense, uncommon experience for me, and I’m gonna gush now about an influential young man I never knew:             Jordan Robinson.             I’m so thankful to the filmmaker behind this, Justin Robinson . As he put it, this movie was [“about a brother, by a brother”], and I can’t imagine how difficult and/or therapeutic it was to make, but without the film, there would be one less lovely testament to Jordan out in the world, which some of his loved on...

I reference such a variety of TV and movies here, guys, but the point is to kindly try to relate to a few and contrast myself against them. If you'd like to share your list or your comparison to a favorite character, please feel free to reach out.

-Dirty Dancing- 2017

Ooooookay, at five-something pm on May 24, 2017, my friend Sasha and I watched the new ABC rendition of Dirty Dancing . I wrote the following in real time and in present tense.

Thoughts

1. I cannot think of anything to write for a joking article titled, "How to Prove to Coworkers That You Are, In Fact, Not a Cat". I haven't yet been able to turn out something like this . 2. Jeffrey Dean Morgan. I've watched the now-defunct show "Magic City" because of him. Love him. And I want Steven Strait. That said, the show, which unfortunately was cancelled in 2013, was just pretty good. It contains things I find compelling, but...it was sometimes as if I was drawn up to a front row seat and left...disappointed, shifting in my chair, reaching for my phone. To help alleviate my guilt about saying that, I have to mention that Danny Huston was awesome, playing a self-centered murderer for whom torture came as naturally and mundanely as blinking, with more screen time, and possibly more darkness, than the Axe Man he played on "American Horror Story". Also, Jessica Marais was both a survivor with an ugly past and a ridiculously attractive ma...

I Just Watched "Stoker"

I recently watched Stoker for the first time. I was excited about the 2013 film as soon as I saw the cover. I mean, the colors, the tree branches around the title, the font, and the main character, India's odd expression...Also, the cover stated that the film had been directed by Park Chan-wook, the director of Oldboy . This was such good news that I was excited to see it! So I had a movie night with my roommate and felt permanently changed by a flick they said depicted how "Everybody's crazy"...at least on screen.
